“Family in Norway” was painted on the ramp walls of the Queens Museum of Art in Queens, New York. This large-scale installation depicts Valerie Atkisson’s Norwegian ancestors with landscape, portraits, and pictorial stories. Vital information (birth and death dates and places) is written and what is known about individuals is visually depicted, from Atkisson’s great-grandmother, Ragna Johnson Maughan, through ten generations of ancestors who lived in Trondheim and Alta, Norway.
