Peters’ Bolt traces Valerie Atkisson’s Welch ancestors, beginning with her great-grandmother Laura Peters, an immigrant to the United States from Wales. She married a rancher and was the first woman to settle in what is now Idaho. Her parents owned a mill in Wales that they sold to come to America. They headed West via New Orleans, the Mississippi River and handcart to Salt Lake City. One of the things they brought with them on their journey was a bolt of linen. Laura Peters’ mother was the illegitimate child of a servant and the son of the house, raised by her grandparents. Their roots split into different regions of Wales going back six or seven generations.
